Termites - those dastardly little creatures that can destroy whole buildings without barely any warning. They are veracious little eaters and gnaw their way through any wood sources they can find including: home framing, sills, beams, flooring, furniture, ceilings – you name it, if it’s wood, they like it! Often times, the damage these tiny little destroyers cause is not even covered by your homeowners insurance policy; leaving you holding the enormous bill to repair or rebuild.
The most common species of termite here in the moist Tidewater Region around Virginia Beach are the Eastern Subterranean Termite – this species is often considered the most destructive of them all. They live in colonies numbering anywhere from 100,000 to 1,000,000 strong at least five to ten feet underground and usually within fifty feet of their food source. They build ‘mud tubes’ that are like termite highways allowing them to freely move from their cavernous dens beneath the ground into the deep recesses of your home to safely feed. These creatures are rarely seen because they must remain in constant contact with the soil; except during the annual flight times in late winter to early spring. That is when these swarms of reproductive termites with the appearance of ‘flying ants’ spread out from their colony in search of new spots to set up housekeeping. Here are a few things you can do to limit these little pests from finding your home on their dining tour this year:
- Keep your foundation free from mulch and plants
- Store firewood at least 25 feet from your house
- Keep moist, dead stumps and brush cleared from your yard
- Fix leaks in pipes or AC units as soon as possible
- Use gutters and downspouts to keep moisture away from your foundation
- Ventilate attics, crawlspaces, and basements
- Inspect your foundation for signs of termites on a regular basis
Even with your best efforts to deter these precocious beasts, you can still find yourself face-to-face with a destructive termite problem. The fact that they live deep underground and must be completely eliminated or they will just quickly repopulate coupled with the fact that they have built up resistance to many of the over-the-counter treatments make them hard to eradicate on your own.
